While all three recipes are packed with the exact same grub-based protein and farm-fresh nutrition, the "mouthfeel" makes a big difference depending on your flock’s eating habits. Here is a quick guide to matching the feed to the hen:
1. Pellets
- Best for: The "Messy Eaters" & Large Flocks.
- Why choose it: If you often find a lot of powdered feed spilled on the ground Pellets are your best friend. Because they are compact cylinders, they are harder for chickens to flick out of the feeder.
- Big Bonus: They prevent "selective eating." In loose mixes, clever hens sometimes pick out the tasty grain bits and leave the essential vitamins at the bottom of the bowl. With Pellets, every bite is a complete, balanced meal.
2. Crumbles
- Best for: Small Breeds (Bantams/Silkies) & The "Average" Eater.
- Why choose it: This is the universal crowd-pleaser. It has a texture similar to granola crumbs. It’s small enough for petite beaks to handle easily but substantial enough to peck at.
- Big Bonus: If you have a mixed flock of large and small birds, Crumbles are the safest middle ground that everyone can eat without struggle.
3. Textured Mix
- Best for: The "Foragers" & Enrichment Lovers
- Why choose it: This is a loose feed where you can actually see the individual whole grains, dried veggies, and grubs. It mimics what chickens would find in the wild.
- Big Bonus: It provides mental stimulation! Hens love scratching through the mix to find different textures.

We recommend Fresh Pecks All Flock for mixed flocks! This will provide a more well rounded diet for the other feathered friends in your flock, such as roosters or ducks. Always provide free-choice calcium in a separate feeder for laying hens.
-
Yes! While not all chicken feeds can be given to ducks, Fresh Pecks is made with farm-fresh ingredients that ducks naturally love! With a healthy mix of insects, vegetables, whole grains, vitamins, minerals, and probiotics, you can keep your ducks happily nourished. The feed is formulated with 37 milligrams of niacin (vitamin B3) per pound. If your ducks need extra niacin, brewer's yeast is a great supplement to their diet. Pellets, as opposed to crumbles, are typically recommended for ducks.
-
Just like different dog breeds, different chickens have different nutritional needs and varying appetites. This means not all chickens need the same amount of feed per day. A small hen will likely eat less than a larger one. However, you can anticipate the average, active chicken that is of laying age to eat about ¼ of a pound of feed daily. A bantam breed will likely eat about ⅛ of a pound per day, and a large breed chicken will eat between ¼ and ½ of a pound daily.
-
When it comes to a flock with younger and old feathered friends, you will want to choose your feed based on the youngest members of your flock. This likely means feeding Little Pecks to your whole flock as your little ones grow big and strong since feeding chicks under 20 weeks of age too much calcium can be detrimental to their health. However, you will want to supplement your older layer hens with free-choice oyster shell for supplemental calcium.
-
Fresh Pecks is formulated for the best health of your lovely layers, including its calcium levels. However, laying hens all have varying needs for calcium to stay healthy and chickens’ calcium needs fluctuate throughout the year. It’s always best to provide supplemental, free-choice calcium for your flock, no matter the feed. Chickens will naturally crave more calcium as they need it, and self-regulate their calcium intake.

Absolutely. There are many benefits to fermenting Fresh Pecks, including increasing the feed’s protein levels, probiotics, and more. Learn how to ferment your Fresh Pecks.
