    Calcium for chickens

I think it’s pretty good stuff. I’ve seen a girl or two get in there not sure if they like how fine it is compared to the oyster shells. It’s a lot finer and it’s next to the grit so I figured I’ll know in a bit when the ball goes down That they’ve actually been eating it.

    Just a nibble

I leave a bowl of about a 1/4 cup in the coop weekly for my hens to nibble on and they do. Happy to know I am giving them just a little extra goodness each week.

    Layer Calcium

This is the first time for me to use your calcium I am very impressed with this product. Normally my girls waste a lot of their calcium but with this product they just take what they need and don’t push it aside. I will be purchasing this product on a regular basis.

FAQ
  • Calcium is important for many reasons. It’s imperative for their nervous system, digestive system, bone growth/development, phosphorus absorption, and for maintaining healthy blood flow and heart rate. Lastly, it’s crucial for strong eggshells, which are made up of about 90% calcium.

Considering the daily calcium requirements for basic bodily functions, in addition to the calcium requirements for a hen that lays an egg every other day, calcium is crucial to their health and longevity.

Calcium is drawn from the bones for eggshell development. It is especially important that a laying hen gets enough calcium so that she can both create eggshells and build new bone.

  • Yes. Calcium needs vary for each hen. A lot of factors come into play: age, rate of lay, illness/disease, digestive health, and diet to name a few.Free-choice supplemental calcium allows a hen to adjust her calcium consumption based on her needs.

  • Oyster shells are a widely known source of calcium for chickens, however there are some notable differences between Grubbly Farms Calcium compared to oyster shells.

Efficiency:  Grubbly Farms Calcium Supplement is a form of calcium carbonite (naturally occurring aragonite) rather than calcite (oyster shells). Aragonite is the most efficient calcium source available for chickens because the crystalline structure is easier for hens to absorb and use, which is crucial for strong eggshells.

Sustainability:  Aragonite is sustainably mined from sedimentation processes that are naturally and consistently forming in the Bahamas. It’s also carbon negative, so harvesting removes more carbon from the air than the processing emits. Oyster shell collection can lead to ecosystem disruption.

Purity and Non-Animal Based:  Aragonite is non-animal based, reducing the risk of contamination with marine borne pathogens. It’s also naturally very pure because it is mined from marine deposits. Oyster shells can vary in quality as a by-product of the food industry.

Preferred Taste:  Aragonite has a more neutral taste compared to oyster shells, which can be too salty or fishy for some of your pickier ladies.

  • You generally don’t have to worry about excess calcium in backyard flocks. Avoid mixing it with feed. When the option is provided separately, they won’t typically eat it unless they need it. If you are concerned about calcium excess and notice calcium deposits on eggs, consult your veterinarian.

  • Chicks do not need supplemental calcium however there is no harm in them having access. They likely won’t eat it. It’s more important for chicks to have supplemental protein treats, like Grubblies.

  • Provide calcium year-round in a separate, easy-to-access bowl for chickens 20+ weeks.
