Hemp hurd is the woody core of the hemp plant, which is highly absorbent, odor-resistant, and compostable.
The frequency of hemp bedding replacement will depend on how you manage your flock. As a general guideline, hemp bedding should be replaced when its full absorbency has been reached. The litter will no longer fluff up when you stir it, and it will feel heavier than dry hemp bedding. The number of chickens you have, the size of their coop, how much time the birds spend inside the coop, and feces management systems will all impact the longevity of the hemp bedding.
If you’re hoping to naturally aid in increasing omega content in eggs, we’d recommend following the feeding guide and mixing into feed.
If you’re using as a snack, we recommend alternating it with Grubblies. They’re a nice treat for hand feeding, scattering on the ground for free ranging, or a little something special to get them back to the coop, just as you probably use Grubblies!
One bag will cover about 20 square feet with a 2 inch depth.
Yes! Hemp bedding is all natural and is safe for chickens if they accidentally consume some of the hemp hurds. Even though hemp bedding comes from the same family of plants as marijuana, it does not contain significant levels of the psychoactive elements found in cannabis plants. Our hemp bedding is suitable for chicks 1 week and older. To reduce the risk of impaction, please provide chick grit to aid in digestion while using bedding.
Grit is essentially tiny, sharp, insoluble pieces of rock. Free-ranging chickens instinctively ingest rocks to help digest their food because they don’t have teeth.
Grit is an important part of digestion. Since chickens don’t have teeth, they rely on grit to help grind down food in their gizzard. An absence of grit can create digestive problems such as impaction or sour crop. A strong, healthy gizzard means healthy digestion, which improves nutrient absorption. This is critical for egg production, egg quality, and a hen’s overall health.
We love rose quartz as chicken grit for a lot of reasons. It’s a durable mineral that doesn’t easily break down by the acid in the gizzard, so it’s very effective and lasts a long time. Grubbly Farms rose quartz is sustainably sourced from a family-owned mine in the USA. It is free of chemicals, safe for the environment, and a beautiful natural pink that sparkles in the sunlight. Who doesn’t love a little bling in the hen house? And while we can’t make any “official” claims, we hear rose quartz has soothing properties, promoting calm and balance. We all know a chicken who could use that! We strongly endorse healthy, happy, chill chickens with subtle bling (that’s responsibly and sustainably sourced in the USA, of course).
Chickens should always have access to grit. Keep it in a separate feeder, so they can help themselves whenever they need it. It’s also important to make sure they always have access to fresh, clean water. Grit can make them thirsty.
